About Santorini
As one of the most popular destinations in the world, Santorini, attracts millions of visitors every year with its wild natural beauty, the tiny villages and the romantic sunset. Located on the southern side of the Aegean Sea and 107 km North of Crete, Santorini had various names in the ancient times reflecting its shape (Strongyle, the round one) and unquestionable beauty (Kallisti, the fairest one).
However, a severe volcanic eruption in the early 17th century buried the Bronze Age city of Akrotiri that was discovered by the Greek archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos during 1967. A caldera collapse at the same time gave the island its present form. Nowadays, the caldera of Santorini is one of the most famous water-filled calderas in the world and boat tours depart daily from the old port of Fira for a visit to the volcano.
